The new 451B is NOT a re-issue of the C451 system.
The old C451 is a modular system, i.e. it can use multiple capsules.
With the old 451 U can use all the ck range of capsules - i.e. all patterns and colors, and very practical swivels.
With the new 451 U have 2 give up the option, which means U cannot use the BLUE capsule 4 ex, granting the mic the C-12 or 414 silver sound. This way U could have BOTH sounds in 1...
The new capsule resembles the ck-1 cardioid. The sound is not the same, but "close".
When Harman take over a company they throw the sentiments away and head str8 4 the cash...
On the other hand, the 414-uls is not even close 2 the original (414EB). AKG (and now Harman) have the reputation of using the same serial numbers 4 "re-issues" that sound nothing like the original. Try the C-12VR 4 size... :-)
As 4 the 451/414 issue, the 2 mics r worlds apart. Asking which 1 is "better" is comparing humus and tchina.
The 451 is a harsh mic. It's 1 of the brightest colors in the paint box. That's y the answer is useless without the relevant details.
Use it in the WRONG situation and U'll have 2 run 4 cover, and send ur ears 2 Dr. Ticho 4 adjustments.
Yet in the RIGHT application, it can make the kit sound simply BRILLIANT.
Since mics r used 4 more than 1 application, their color should b considered with other sources U intend 2 use - acc/el gtrs and vocals etc.
I like the 414 4 el gtrs and some vocals, while the 451 is useless 4 these sources 4 my blood.
On the orher hand the 451 shines on acc gtrs, and everything that needs brightening up.
It's a small capsule mic, so the color and low end r "tight".
Both mics may b used 4 OHs.
1 popular trick 4 ex. is 2 tape the 451 2gether with an sm57, align the phase between the 2 capsules (very important!) and use it on the snr top. When blended right U get the mid crack of the 57 with the bright attack of the 451 - yet another reason 2 get the 451.
The 414 is multi-pattern, large diaphragm. That means the capsule "speed" and off-axis coloration is totally different...
That means the acoustics, drum color, bleed and mic placement will play a major role.
How on earth can some1 recommend a mic preference w/o the SLIGHTEST idea of what the source sounds like?
Only when the thick veil of secrecy regarding the Ayote kit and its whereabouts will b removed, a more reasonable answer may b made available.
I guess we'll just have 2 w8 4 the BBC's investigative report...
Peace,
