Auratones were introduced b4 the NS-10s, in order 2 simul8 TV speakers - a way of checking how would the mix sound on "shitty" speakers w/ limited fq response and per4mance - hence the nick.
Just like the NS10 however, it revealed the midrange so problems were made very easy 2 detect. Ppl got used 2 checking their mixes on the 5c's, which became an important tool and reference.
If the mix did not sound honky on the Auratones, it meant that the midrange was evened out nicely, and the "edges" were just adding the "frame" , 1 more step 2wards assuring that the mix would transl8 well on most systems.
I own a pair (which I like a lot), and last time I checked (3 yrs ago) some were still manufactured in California in a small plant with no web site.
I don't believe U can find new 1s on the market now.
However, by a miraculous turn of events, a pair just happened 2 pop out @
the bazaar, describing the Auratones as legendary monitors, just in time and sync with this debate...
Well waddya know.
Peace,
