That's more like it.
Room:
As far as I can tell from the pic, the room is rectangular, tiled, concrete / plaster walls, minimum and homogeneous treatment.
This means MUCHO identical reflections, un-diffused, very live, comb-filtered sound field.
All this translates 2 a very colored sound, and not a pleasant 1. Fast reflections over power the attack, and the overall sound is resonant around some center FQs, not evenly spread across the spectrum.
U can try & vary the treatment - put in some more stuff - carpet, wood, furniture, curtains - anything that may enrich the reflection color and block some of the already dominant color. Mind U though - the idea is 2 enrich the room, not 2 choke it.
Placement:
Again, looking @ the pic, the kit looks like it was just set up @ a physical convenient position.
After tuning the floor tom (...2 b continued...) mute the other drums (using a blanket), and move the FT around the room.
Find the spot where it resonates the most (think thunder), fix it there USING GAFER'S TAPE and tell the drummer the minute he moves the FT even an inch U'll skin him alive with ur Bowie knife, then his girlfriend, then the rest of the family. Pull out ur knife and place it in the window 4 the drummer 2 look @.
Now move the kick drum around the FT, covering all spots possible in relation 2 the fixed FT. Find the best point, fix the KD USING GAFER'S TAPE, smile @ the drummer and point @ the knife in the window.
Now set the rest of the kit in relation 2 the FT & KD.
DO NOT REMOVE THE KNIFE FROM THE WINDOW.
Tuning:
The kit looks like a Mapex Mars, not the Vinnie Appice choice of kit but definitely capable of decent sound.
It sounds like the SNR is well open with a long overtone. Your mileage may vary, but it sounds totally different then the rest of the kit. Tune all drums 2 sound as 1 integral instrument. Shortening the overtone may help U get a better focus in this type of room.
Get the toms 2 sound more like the SNR or vice-versa. Toms and KD sound like they need re-tuning anyway.
Performance:
As in most cases, the cymbals r played WAY 2 LOUD, toms and KD r WAY 2 LOW. Get the drummer 2 play a better balance, UNTIL U HEAR THE KIT AS U LIKE IT. If it's not there, live in the room, it will never get on 2 tape / hard drive. Get the knife closer 2 the drummer and throw in a spotlight 2 get the msg through.
Micing:
Ur overheads r WAY 2 HIGH. In such a room get the OH ~ 60 cm from the CYs. Experiment with placement, try 1 mono OH mic instead 4 ex.
Ur KD mic is @ a problematic ( IMHO ) spot. Remove the resonant (front) KD skin and place the hole halfway between the beater and the FT. Replace the front skin rim and screws and tune the KD.
HH mic: (if used) - Get it away from the air escaping the hats. Start by placing it above the hats, pointing half way between the bell and the edge. Move it around till U get a decent HH sound. YMMV.
I can't c the SNR mic - so I can't comment.
Looks like ur mic cables r touching the drum shells - bad idea. Vibrations don't stop @ cables & Samson mics. If U have an assistant setting up the session get him 2 tape the cables right, point @ the drummer, then @ the knife, then the assistant, then utter quietly : "...& U're next."
Pull out any gate / compressor from the sound path. U can add those later, with a wonderful undo option.
Start here, c where it gets U.
Peace,
